I have been asked by students and colleagues whether or not I believe that each of us comes into the world with a divine purpose. My answer is always an unequivocal
YES!!!!
Discover Your Life Purpose In 20 Questions Or Less
Get a pen and paper and go into your bedroom and shut the door. You need to remain uninterrupted for about an hour. Turn off the phone and the cell phone (or at least put it on vibrate). Write each of the following questions, one at a time. Do not answer the next question until you have fully answered the previous one.
You have my permission to be silly, selfish and whimsical. Write whatever comes into your mind WITHOUT EDITING IT. You can edit it later. If you catch yourself smiling or getting butterflies in your stomach, you are on the right track.
Remember, no one will see your answers but you.
- List all activities, events hobbies and service that you do “just for the fun of it”
- In the past, what were your favorite activities or pastimes? How have things changed since that time?
- What do you spend most of your time doing?
- Name ten traits that you like about yourself.
- Name ten traits that you admire in others?
- Name your ten greatest weaknesses.
- Name ten things that you absolutely hate.
- Now, take the list of things that you hate and make ten statements reflecting the fact that you love the opposite (ie I hate being fat. But, I love being thin)
- If you could be anyone, who would you be? Why?
- Name ten things that you are good at.
- Do other people ask you for help? If so, what do they normally ask you to do?
- If you could give a speech about something you know, what would your speech be about?
- Do you have any regrets. If so, what are they?
- You are magically transported to your own funeral. Write a short eulogy reflecting how you currently live your life.
- Now, write the eulogy that you wish would be read at your funeral.
- What are your core values (freedom, friendship, security, generosity, etc)
- Have you overcome any hardships or disabilities in your lifetime? If so, what are they?
- With respect to the disabilities and hardships that you have conquered, could others benefit from your experience. If so, how and why?
- Are you involved in any social causes? If so, what are they?
- How can you use your strengths, talents and passions to benefit other people.
Create A Life Purpose Statement (Mission Statement)
You statement of Life Purpose should follow a pattern that identifies your strengths and talents, your passion and a benefit to others. Here is an example:
- I will use my talents with respect to financial matters to help others achieve financial peace and security.
- I will use my talent as a guitarist to entertain others and make them feel relaxed or at ease.
- I will you my talent as a speaker to persuade others to do something about the genocide in Darfur
Simply put, you answer three questions.
What can I do? For whom? About What?
In closing remember that as you develop and move forward on your life path, your Statement of Life Purpose will evolve with your experiences. You may find that what you thought was your passion – isn’t. That is okay. This is one area where it is okay to shift gears.
But, keep moving forward and you will be well on your way to discovering your life purpose.
