Drug Abuse Treatment Options

Posted on | October 7, 2009 | 1 Comment

Now is always the best time to seek drug abuse treatment.

Substance abuse has become a huge problem in the United States; and, every drug rehab center has a long waiting list filled with people seeking help for their addiction.

Many of the people are unsure of whether or not they need inpatient treatment; or, if an outpatient treatment facility would be a better fit for their needs.

Inpatient Drug Abuse Treatment

The most common type of drug addiction treatment is called inpatient treatment.

As you can imagine, inpatient drug rehabilitation is very intense and provides a person who is addicted to drugs with a lot of help to cure their disease. In this environment, the patient can safely detoxify in an environment that can offer treatment for the horrendous withdrawal symptoms often associated with the precess.

Inpatient Drug Abuse Treatment:  What To Expect

When a person first enters an inpatient drug treatment center, they can expect to be in what is known as detoxification for about one week.

Detoxification. Detoxification assists the patient in ridding the substances from their body.  It also gives the staff the opportunity to continuously observe the patient to ensure that the patient does not suffer any lasting ill effects from the process.  In the event that the patient needs additional medical care during the process, the facility has qualified medical personnel on premises or close at hand to assist.

Therapy. After a person has successfully completed the detoxification process they will enter into a therapy group based on their age and sometimes their gender.

A combination of detoxification and therapy will best help the patient get the proper drug abuse treatment that they need through the use of a therapeutic community.

A Therapeutic Community And Drug Abuse Treatment

A therapeutic community will provide the support that a recovering drug addict needs when they are at a very fragile state in their life.

This group of people will hold each other accountable for their actions as well as provide the love, care, and support that a person needs to be able to start making better decisions in their life.

During the therapy portion of their addiction treatment, this “community” of people will attend group therapy classes, events, and meetings together. In fact, the group will perform all activities associated with the drug rehabilitation program together in order to increase accountability and the ability to ask for help during periods of low self discipline.

The ultimate benefit of group therapy is that it builds a support system when they get out so that when they want to do drugs they will have someone they can lean on to help them out.

Outpatient Drug Abuse Treatment

Another type of drug abuse treatment for those addicted to drugs is called outpatient treatment.

Outpatient treatment is for those with a substance abuse problem that is not quiet bad enough severe enough for them to attend inpatient treatment.

Quite frankly, it may be the only option for a patient that refuses to attend inpatient treatment.

The outpatient treatment option represent a compromise tool to get the drug addict some sort of treatment.  Often, if successful, the patient realizes that he or she needs inpatient treatment and transitions into that environment accordingly.

There are a few different factors that are considered when trying to decide if outpatient drug addiction treatment is the proper choice for someone who wants to recover from their addiction. Support from family and friends, length of addiction, and the types of drugs a person is addicted to all play a part in finding a good fit for someone who needs help.

An outpatient drug treatment center will provide recovering addicts with a therapy group that meets a couple of times per week to talk about different aspects of addiction. These groups are usually large in size, but that is great for everyone involved.

Finding the Right Type of Drug Abuse Treatment is Important

It is important for a person to find the right type of drug abuse treatment for them.

The overall decision will be made by the drug treatment center when a person first seeks out help. If the drug rehab treatment needed is of a very serious nature a person will more than likely be admitted to an inpatient drug rehabilitation program.

But if the addiction is nor a serious problem or the patient is uncooperative, an outpatient substance abuse treatment is an available option for a patient.

Most importantly, the existence of either option destroys the most common excuse offered by the substance abuser – that there is no help available.
