Preparation for Drug Addiction Recovery

Posted on | October 6, 2009 | 3 Comments

Making the decision to enter into drug addiction recovery is one of the best decisions a person who is addicted to drugs can ever make.

Drug addiction can destroy a person’s life and the lives of the people around them. Before a person enters a drug treatment center there are certain things that they should do to prepare for their stay. An inpatient drug rehab program will usually last for about a month.

Let’s take a look at the things that need to be taken care of during the month a person is planning to receive drug addiction treatment.

What To Do Before Entering Drug Addiction Recovery

One of the things that will need to be done prior to going into drug addiction recovery is making sure that the bills will remain paid while the person is in treatment.

It is very important to have a life to come back to when a person completes a drug rehab program, so it is imperative that the bills that are due get paid on time.

Some people miss this step when they go to drug rehab centers and when they come out of treatment find that their lights have been cut off and their landlord has put their belongings on the curb.

Make A List Of Allowed Items Before Entering Treatment

Another thing that will need to be done prior to a person showing up at a drug treatment center is a list of items that are allowed needs to be prepared.

The patient will know what can, and cannot be, taken in their personal belongings. Most drug rehab programs will not provide patients with things such as clothes or special amenities. Some do keep emergency toiletries on hand in case someone forgets a toothbrush or bar of soap, but it will usually be up to the person receiving treatment to bring everything they will need for their entire stay.

Since items that are allowed into the drug rehab centers vary it is best to call ahead for what is permitted and what is not.

Be Sure To Keep An Eye On The Patient’s House

Drug addicts do not usually have the most trustworthy friends.  It is important to have someone who can be trusted watch over the patient’s house and personal belongings while they are in treatment.

As previously mentioned, the drug addiction treatment will last for about a month, and nobody wants to leave their house and other personal possessions unattended for that long of a period of time.

Make a List of Things to Do Before Entering Drug Addiction Recovery

It may be necessary for a person to make out a list to follow to insure that everything that needs to be done is done.

If a list is not made then something important may be overlooked and a person may come out of drug addiction recovery with a whole list of problems.

Obviously, this is not healthy.

So, assist the patient by making a list of everything that needs to be done in preparation for the treatment as well as while the patient is away.  This will ensure that, when the patient returns home, there will be little or no chance of a unwanted stress caused by an unfortunate incident.

Most importantly, it will also prevent the patient from making yet another excuse as to why he or she must delay drug addiction treatment once again.
