Understanding and Applying The Law Of Attraction (Part 1)

Posted on | May 28, 2009 | No Comments

The law of attraction forms the basis of everything that constitutes your reality.

Some people are born with an innate, unconscious ability to apply the law of attraction effectively.  However, most of meander aimlessly through life manifesting by accident as our desires and attitudes change over time.

It is essential that we develop an understanding of the conscious application of the law of attraction in order to live life on purpose.  Only by conscious application of the law of attraction can we find the joy of receiving our heart’s desire.

Law Of Attraction Defined:  Like Attracts Like

You have heard most if not all of these quotes, which succinctly state the principle underlying the law of attraction.

  • As a man thinketh, so is he.
  • Birds of a feather flock together.
  • Like attracts like.

Esther and Jerry Hicks state the law of attraction like this:

That which is like unto itself, is drawn

Here is an example:

All of us have had occasions where we wake up “on the wrong side of the bed.”  As the day progresses, Murphy’s Law seems to take hold of us.  If it can go wrong, it will – and does.  Soon, your day is spiraling downward, out of control as things seem to get worse and worse.  The law of attraction explains the “bad fortune” as the result of the bad attitude we had when we first got out of bed.

We see evidence of the law of attraction at work elsewhere in our society in those that constantly speak of being “sick and tired.”  They are usually the most fatigued and the most ill.  The more we speak of the ‘war on poverty”, the more poverty manifests itself in our society.  The more we think about the “war on terror”, the more terrorists seem to manifest in our world.

The Law Of Attraction Is At Work – Even If You Are Ignorant Of It

The law of attraction creates your reality despite your ignorance of its existence.

As I think back over the course of my life, I can clearly see the law of attraction at work.  I grew up in an area of the country filled with negative people.  I grew up believing

  • The glass as half empty
  • Life was hard
  • Money was hard to acquire
  • Success was elusive
  • Failure was to be expected and a source of shame

As a result, the glass was usually half empty, life has been hard and money always seemed to be out of my reach.

In contrast, I have a close and dear friend who grew up in a household where an entrepreneurial spirit was taught, cultivated and encouraged.  He was trained by his parents to believe

  • That anything was possible.
  • Money was easy to acquire
  • Success is the norm
  • Failure is not expected, but if it comes, it is a learning opportunity

Now that he is grown, he seems to have the “Midas Touch” even though he will readily admit that he is not the smartest or best educated person.  But, he was taught to think positively and use the law of attraction to achieve his dreams.  Success seems to have come “easy” to him while it eluded me for so long.

As we begin to consciously apply the law of attraction in your life, it will become obvious that there is a direct relationship between our thoughts, the emotions associated with them, and our circumstances.

Our life did not show up by chance.

We cause it all, good our bad, by our thoughts, amplified by our emotions.

Conscious Creation:  Deliberate Use Of The Law Of Attraction

It is imperative that we all deliberately control our thoughts.  Without a doubt, I have learned through experience that whatever I dwell upon in my mind, I attract into my reality.

That first little thought is a seed that I plant in the fertile soil of my mind.

That seed, through the law of attraction, begins to germinate and grows larger and larger. As it grows larger, it becomes stronger and more powerful because I pay more attention to it.  If it is something I want, I focus more and more upon it because it makes me feel good.  If it is something I do not want, I end up focusing on it more and more as I worry about it, hoping that fate will pass me by.

Unfortunately, there is no fate.  I am the captain of my ship.

I am responsible, because, eventually that seed I planted bears fruit in the physical realm.  When we see something we want, we say “I want that.”  We begin to attract “that” toward us by our attention.  The speed at which “that” is attracted is magnified by the level of emotion associated with wanting “that.”

By the same token, when we see something we say “I don’t want that.”  Even though we don’t want “that” we still begin to attract it into our life because we are focusing upon it.  If we have strong emotions associated with not wanting “that”, we magnify and accelerate the speed within which it manifests itself into our life.

The law of attraction leaves no room for the concept of “exclusion.”  If we give “that” our focus, we release our thought energy and include it in our vibration.  If we hold our focus on it long enough (and amplify it with sufficient emotion) we manifest it into our reality whether we want it or not.

Protecting Ourselves From The Consequences Of Negative Thoughts

Fortunately, there are two protection mechanisms built into the law of attraction.  These are the concept of “delay” and “feelings.”

Things do not manifest themselves into our reality instantaneously.  There is a time delay that gives us the opportunity to reflect upon our thoughts and refocus on things that we actually want to consciously create.

During this time delay, we can gauge whether or not we are thinking correctly by the way we “feel” about it.

Is our spirit saying “Yes, this is something that I want.  I am happy and excited.”  Or is our spirit saying “Whoa, hold on.  I don’t know about this.”

By listening to our feelings, we can determine whether or not we are on our way to manifesting a disaster or a miracle.

So, in closing, we need to begin to guard our thoughts and words.  We must focus, with emotion, upon what we want – not what you don’t want.  If we check our feelings often, we can readily determine whether or not we are on the proper path.

In Part 2, we will learn more about how to use the law of attraction with our feelings to amplify our thoughts and create the reality we desire.
